The Trend of Qur’ānic Commentary According to the Revelation Order: An Analytical Study
Abstract
In the twentieth century, various trends emerged in the field of commentaries of the Qur’an. The revelation order of the Sūras is so famous in current time. The commenters preferred to adopt the chronological order of the Sūrahs for their commentaries. These authors have the view that this method of exegesis is accordance with the life stages of the Holy Prophet. This group of Qur’ānic commentary has the view to build Muslim society as the Holy Prophet gradually established his community. The study of the surahs in their chronological order helps to solve the problem of abrogation. Few commentators have said view to adopt this way for their commentaries. But the main question against this trend is that the Qur’anic sūrahs were not revealed in complete form chronologically. In this case, there is not any authentic way to guess that when and where the verses and sūrahs were revealed. Moreover, few commentators have the view that the present arrangement of sūrahs in the Holy Qur’an is because of miraculous nature. In this research, an attempt has been made to introduce this new trend and with its analysis critically.
