Kitab-al-Shifa, Qazi Ayaz, Freedom of Expression, Blasphemy, ApostatesAbstract
Post 9/11 era has become a criterion for the interrelationship of the west and the Muslim world. In this perspective the terms like Islam phobia, war of ideas, clash of civilizations, fundamentalism and Islamic fascism are commonly used in the press and social media. Freedom of expression is a basic human right in Islam. Reason is of great importance and dissent is regarded as a mercy. Islam provides certain moral codes and limits for freedom of expression to avoid undesirable social practices that distinguish it from the Western concept of freedom of expression. The Qur'an admonishes not to dishonor or give bad names to the Gods and role models of other religions so that they in turn do not dishonor or give bad names to your God and role models. In Kitab al-Shifa, Qazi Ayaz has described the rules regarding the humiliation of the very person of the Prophet (peace be on him) from the Shari'ah on the said heinous act of blasphemy. An analytical study of the contemporary Western concept of freedom of opinion will be presented.
