Qurʼanic Teachings in Persian Iqbal’s Poetry: A Contemporary Study
Abstract
Timeline of Qur’ānic intellectuals, thinkers and exegetes belongs to subcontinent cannot be completed unless Muḥammad Iqbāl (d: 1938) name is included. Iqbl has been acknowledged as one of the eminent & most influential personalities of subcontinent in 20th century. Iqbāl was a multidimensional personality. He was a good lawyer as well as a politician but the fame & respect he received as a philosophical poet has no match to any other title. Therefore, he was titled as a Poet of East and Thinker of Pakistan. Unlike other poets of that era, his poetry revolves around the social, religious and intellectual issues of mankind. Readers of his poetry do witness again and again Iqbal extreme love for Prophet Muḥammad (SAW) and Qur’ān. Urdu Exegetes of subcontinent endorsed Iqbāl thinking by quoting his poetry in their literary work. Dr. Muḥammad Iqbal tried his best for revival of Muslim nation by conveying the Message of Qur’ān through his poetry. He stated many themes in his Persian prose for enhancing Muslim Ummah. Furthermore Iqbāl had a great desire to reconnect Muslim nation with Qur’ān. It seems that, vision, guidance and roadmap can be sought from Iqbal poetry to solve contemporary problems being faced by Muslim Ummah today. By adopting descriptive methodology, this research paper is a humble attempt to extract Qur’ānic message from Iqbal poetry and its relevancy with current issues.
