Communication System in Prophetic Time: An Analytical and Historical Study
Keywords:
Sīrah, armed communication, intelligence, Prophetic military strategyAbstract
From the earliest stages of his mission, the Prophet Muḥammad (peace be upon him) instituted systematic, discreet, and strategically informed practices of communication and intelligence as integral components of governance and military organization. These practices encompassed confidential correspondence, the delegation of information-gathering responsibilities to trusted Companions, and sustained surveillance of hostile movements. Through these measures, he established a cohesive intelligence framework that enabled the anticipation of threats, the implementation of preventive strategies, and the effective operation of counterintelligence to protect the emerging Islamic state from internal subversion and external aggression. Significantly, this intelligence system extended beyond the sphere of warfare to include diplomacy, treaty negotiations, missionary delegations, and the maintenance of internal order. Drawing upon the Prophetic Sīrah, this paper undertakes a historical and analytical examination of the role of intelligence and communication as foundational pillars of statecraft, and assesses the continuing relevance of this Prophetic model for contemporary Muslim states in addressing challenges in diplomacy, defense, and internal security.
